Because it was real. Anybody who worked hard could become successful. Not necessarily rich, but make enough money to buy a home, a car or two, feed a family, etc. All one had to do was buckle down and work hard.
Now, that dream may still be there, but your chances of achieving it are slim to none. It’s pretty hard to pull yourself up by your bootstraps when you can’t afford the boots, and both hands are already full with the three jobs you’re holding down to try and cover the rent.
